3. The Snowshoe Rabbit

Photo of Snow Shoe Rabbit   The Snowshoe Hare (often called bunny or rabbit) is a common animal in many parts of Alaska. Some years there are more rabbits than others. During a summer, in a year when the rabbit population is at its peak, it is easy to see hundreds of these furry creatures on the Steese Highway between Fairbanks and Circle City. The very actions of some rabbits in that area gave rise to this song.

Have you ever seen a Snowshoe Rabbit
sitting still beside the Steese Highway?
He sits by the road ‘till he sees your car,
then hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, he’s on his way!

Have you ever seen the feet on that rabbit?
Feet you’d think were surely in his way?
As he runs along that’s all you can see,
his feet, feet, feet, feet, feet are on their way!

Did you know that the Snowshoe Rabbit,
often times sends messages that way?
If he thinks there’s reason to be afraid,
He’ll thumb, thump, thump his feet and run away!

Say goodbye to that Snowshoe Rabbit,
now that he has run so far away.
I think I’ll just wait here awhile and see
If “Snowshoe” will come back and visit me.
